Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, made a quirky proclamation last year that Starbuck’s huge lifespan is a 20 chapter book and they are still on chapter 4 or 5. Howard used this metaphor to throw light on coffee-shop’s bright future and the best coffee service provider worldwide but one has to tell Mr. Schultz that it the chapter 5, where the twist and turns begin.
If this was all true (as said by Mr CEO) then how to justify the closing of 600 stores worldwide? The reason given was that Starbucks wanted to put breaks on the exponential growth strategy. Isn’t that weird? What about the decline in market share to 11 % (which is indeed a huge figure) as tracked by xAd Inc.? Let’s go deeper and find out Why Starbucks is losing out on customers? And if this continues then I am afraid to say the company may have a dark future.
Reason 1: Highly Priced
The dissatisfaction is been increasing day by day even among the loyal customers. The items like sandwiches and salads are priced very high as compared to other chains. The pretzel ham and cheese which was quite reasonable, was called off by some Chief financial officer due to lesser profits it was offering. It seems Starbucks is now running some bureaucratic culture. The actual Starbucks experience has been lost somewhere.
Reason 2: Quality is getting de-graded
Starbucks is losing control of its brand due to ubiquity. Starbucks is available almost at every airport, hospital and numerous corporate cafeterias. Managing out on quality at such places is difficult. The good Starbucks memories are turning pale and sour with this kind of culture where at every nick and corner you find a small Starbuck café.
Reason 3: High attrition rate among employees
Poor staff morale is reflected on their faces. The staff members are prefer going to the competitors like Barista, McDonald’s. It has also been noticed that from the past few years the either the staff is not well trained or they lack technical knowledge about coffee.
Reason 4: No lucrative offers and Mobile ordering delays
Starbucks Corp is facing heavy competition in the market. Locational survey suggests that a huge drift has been noticed towards other chains. Delays on mobile ordering are creating hiccups for the company. They even don’t offer any free service or offers to attract the customers. People prefer a place where they get free/ unlimited Wi-Fi signals or some free cups to relish. They lack in this and if all this continues, there will be a future without Starbucks.
There are lot more other reasons like they have replaced the comfortable chairs and wooden tables with the stainless steel ones. The impact is more of an Office than a café.
